Dairy Free Brazilian Lemon Lemonade (1)

If you spend time on social media, you might be familiar with the viral Brazilian lemonade that made with rounds recently. I decided to make a dairy free version and added my own twist using lemons instead of limes!

Our version isn’t traditional of course, but it’s an incredibly delicious variation! If you want a more traditional version, you can use limes with our recipe as well since we tested both.

If you’re watching your sugar, we included some tips on making this recipe lower in sugar, and we added variations for making this recipe with sweetened condensed oat milk if you can’t have coconut.

Our Brazilian lemonade is:

  • Dairy free
  • Peanut free
  • Can be made without coconut
  • Vegan

What is Brazilian lemonade?

Brazilian lemonade (limonada Suíça, translated Swiss lemonade) is a popular drink in Brazil usually made with limes, sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and ice to create a refreshing sweet and tart limeade drink.

Thanks to social media, Brazilian lemonade had a popularity surge in America recently and I missed out on the height of the trend wave (as I usually do). But I wanted to give this a try making a single serving recipe that is dairy free and using lemons instead of limes, and the result is just as delicious with a different flavor.

I really enjoy the version made with limes, but one day we were out of limes and I decided to give lemons a go since I had those on hand. It’s pretty delicious made with lemons, and my family actually loves this lemon version more than the traditional lime recipe.

You can definitely use limes in our recipe, too, the ingredient ratios here work the same for both lemons and limes (we tested both), so if you want a more traditional recipe, you can use this recipe with limes, too.

How to make Brazilian lemonade with lemons

The steps for this recipe are easy! Here’s an overview, the full instructions are at the bottom of this post.

  1. Wash and cut your lemon half into quarters and remove any seeds you see.
  2. Add the lemon to a small blender (we used a NutriBullet) with the sweetened condensed milk, sugar, water, and ice.
  3. Blend until the ice is mostly crushed and the lemon is blended into small pieces.
  4. Pour into a glass through a strainer, add ice, and serve immediately.
  5. This tends to separate if you put it in the fridge for later, so I’d make it right before serving.

This recipe is meant to be blended with the peel/rind on the lemon. Don’t worry about this causing the drink to be bitter or anything, it adds great flavor without adding bitterness (similar to our regular lemonade recipes).

Since this is a single-serve recipe, I’ve included a note in the recipe card for making a larger 4-serving batch!

Dairy free sweetened condensed milk

There are a few different brands available of sweetened condensed dairy free milk, I used the Andre Prost sweetened condensed coconut milk that our local Walmart carries, but there are a few different brands out there, including an oat milk one if you can’t have coconut.

Here are some of the brands of dairy free sweetened condensed milk I found on Amazon. I have not tried all of these brands myself, so I can’t say how all of them taste except the 2 that we’ve tried (the top 2 on the list):

Please make sure to double check the labels for other allergens or cross contamination if you have severe food allergies. Some of these also contain added thickeners and stabilizers like xanthan gum or guar gum, so if you are sensitive to those I added some notes to the ones that don’t have them.

Can I make this recipe sugar free (or low sugar)?

You can definitely try making this recipe low sugar or sugar free!

Nature’s Charm makes a sugar free sweetened condensed coconut milk that uses erythritol. If you use that and a granulated sugar alternative, such as Swerve or (Swerve with allulose), you can make this very low in sugar.

I don’t know how well this would taste or how well the granulated erythritol would taste, but if you make this sugar free, let me know in the comments how it tastes!
