These days dairy free egg nog is full or additives and preservatives. So why buy egg nog when you can make your own? It is so simple to put a few ingredients together and create a creamy, delicious and rich egg nog, better than any store bought brand. All it takes is a little time and patience.
Base for dairy free egg nog
The key to creamy dairy free egg nog is making a custard with egg yolk and a little bit of sugar, then tempering the eggs with warm milk (dairy free of course). To avoid making scrambled eggs when adding the hot liquid to the egg mixture is to control the liquid temperature. To do this I use a digital thermometer. You can also use a candy thermometer, or meat thermometer. As long as it provides you with increments of one degree (Fahrenheit) it will totally work for this recipe.
The first time I tried making this recipe I didn’t use a thermometer and warmed up my liquid right before it boiled, I turned my egg nog into scrambled egg nog. To me, a thermometer is key! My favorite is this one that can be found on Amazon.
Store bought vs. homemade egg nog
Of course, it is super easy to be at the grocery store and pick up a carton of egg nog, pop it in the fridge and enjoy it at your leisure. But, have you ever read the ingredients on the back of the carton? Usually they contain thickeners, like xantham gum or guar gum. Coloring like caramel color. Artificial and natural ingredients. Some form of sweetener, usually corn syrup or white sugar (disguised as “sugar” on the label). All of these additives can add to the carbohydrate or sugar count on the nutrition label, not to mention all of the “extras” you are adding to your system.
Homemade egg nog only has six pure ingredients. All of which you can control. No extras, no additives, no artificial flavors or colors. For that reason alone I would highly recommend trying to make your own egg nog and just see how it goes. I guarantee it will taste better than anything you can find in the store.

Stand or Hand Mixer
large bowl
Large pot
Grater if using fresh, whole nutmeg
Container to store egg nog (Ball Jar)
Ingredients
- 4 Egg Yolks
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 27 Oz Coconut or Almond Milk
- 1¾ tsp Nutmeg, freshly grated* (1 whole nutmeg) See Note if using pre-ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
Instructions
In a large bowl beat the egg yolks for a couple of minutes until scrambled
Gradually add the sugar until completely dissolved
While egg yolks and sugar are mixing, Bring the almond or coconut milk to temperature (140° Fahrenheit) on medium heat.
Once egg yolks and sugar have dissolved add the nutmeg and cinnamon.
Once the liquid has reached 140° Fahrenheit turn your mixer on slow and SLOWLY add the liquid to the egg mixture. This will temper the eggs. Pour a little liquid in at a time, let the eggs incorporate the liquid and cool down a little, then add more hot liquid. Repeat until all of the liquid has been added to the eggs.
Pour the egg and milk liquid back into the pot and bring back up to 160° Fahrenheit.
This process requires a little bit of patience. You will notice that the temperature reaches about 140° Fahrenheit and takes a bit to reach 160° Fahrenheit.
Remove from the heat and transfer to a Ball jar. Let the egg nog cool on the counter before transferring to the fridge.
Once cool, shake before serving and top with nutmeg and cinnamon and enjoy!
Egg nog will last about 5 days stored in the fridge.
Notes
Notes:
*If you use pre-ground nutmeg you only need about 1tsp. It is much more potent in flavor than freshly ground.
*If using coconut milk be aware that depending on the brand of milk, it may have fat that solidifies when the egg nog has cooled. It may also be thicker than the almond milk.
To thin it out add a little more coconut milk or almond milk to the egg nog mixture when serving.
