Low-sugar mint steamers are the perfect alternative to hot cocoa when your kids want something warm and festive to drink!

Hey there, party people! Ok, so I know what you're thinking: holy ca-freakin'-nnoli, Stephanie. A Christmas post? It's not even Thanksgiving - in fact, there's still a decomposing pumpkin on my porch from Halloween! <-- No? Just me then. Ok, moving on.

Anyway, let me introduce you to my Low-Sugar Mint Steamer! Isn't she cute and festive as a little red glittery button?

I love adding a fun drink or treat to some of our Advent calendar activities, like watching Christmas movies or decorating the tree. It just makes everything more special. I also love that my kids feel like this drink is a treat, but I know that it has a fraction of the sugar of hot cocoa mix, which is a real mom win. 😉

Another li'l added bonus?My kids get such a kick out of using the milk frother (not absolutely necessary, but I highly recommend it - that foam is good times, my friends).

Here are the answers to a few questions I thought you might have!

What is a steamer drink?

A steamer drink is essentially a latte without the espresso. In a coffee shop it would be steamed milk with a shot (or 2 or 3!) of syrup. In this version, I use just use some extract and a little raw sugar.

What kind of milk can be used to make a mint steamer drink?

Any kind of milk can be used in a steamer drink. Coffee shops usually automatically use whole milk unless you specify otherwise. I've used some unsweetened vanilla almond milk instead to lighten it up without sacrificing any of that creamy goodness!

Is a steamer drink healthy?

Well this one is! It's 21 Day Fix approved, Weight Watchers friendly (only 2 points!), gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan!

It's also only about 30 calories with 2 grams of fat 4 grams of sugar.

However, if you're ordering one at your local Starbucks, for the same number of ounces, you'll be taking in 90 calories, 4 ½ grams of fat, and 10 grams of sugar!

Low-Sugar Mint Steamers

Yield: 2 Servings

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

These easy low-sugar mint steamers are a crazy delicious alternative to hot cocoa!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 2 teaspoon raw sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon mint extract
  • red or green food coloring, if desired

Instructions

  1. Heat the almond milk and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat until steaming.
  2. Add the extract and the food coloring if using. Use a small frother (or you could even throw the warm mixture in a blender for a minute) to create the foam, divide into two heat-proof cups.

    Hey there, party Steph! Wait, does it work that way? Haha. This peppermint steamer is just amazing. I love that gorgeous, perfect mint chocolate chip ice cream color... that wonderfully festive candy cane, and lastly that beautiful froth on top. 🙂 It is SO not too soon for this! Especially since the Christmas decorations have hit all the stores already. I need like two cups of this, plus all of decorations for the perfect get-into-the-Christmas mood activity! I know what you mean about the years going by, and the holidays feeling quicker and quicker. It's crazy! Thank you for sharing this wonderful advent calendar idea.       I'm totally party Steph! (falling asleep at 9:00 PM on the nightly counts as a party, yes?) We're kind of shielded from the early holiday decor in our little Alaskan town, but I assumed as much! Glad this is getting you in the holiday spirit, D!     I say bring on the dang holidays, Stephanie! I mean, why not, right?! Since Boy and I are going out to eat for both Thanksgiving and Christmas is doesn't feel like the holidays at all, so I welcome the friendly reminders! PLUS holiday food is THE prettiest, especially Christmas food (and drinks!!!!). 😉 My mother has an advent calendar and I used to LOVE that thing growing up!!! I got super excited to move the little ornaments each day... probably a little too excited, but whatever. <3 Anyways, LOVE these mint steamers!! The color is holiday perfection, my dear!!       I agree! There's definitely been plenty of Christmas music (and possibly terrible dancing) at our house lately and I've been loving it! Advent calendars are the best! My Grandma used to always buy us the chocolate-filled ones, but I know I would have been just as (ok, maybe not just as) excited without the chocolate.     I don't mind not one bit that you posted a holiday recipe, Stephanie!! I totally know what you mean about the holidays just going by waaaaay too fast. By the time everything gets done and you're ready to enjoy it, it's all over. This Advent Calendar idea is brilliant!! Funny how you mention the ginger bread house idea. For a few years in a row, hubby and I would buy a kit and never make the time to put it together and it would be sitting on our pantry shelf months later! I do LOVE holiday baking and new Christmas jammies? The BEST jammies eva 😉 This recipe is pretty awesome too.       Yes, they do go by too fast, so I'm happy to stretch 'em out however I can! That's too funny about the gingerbread house!
