good afternoon i am martha maccallum and this is the story, we are waiting for an update from the police in new york city you can see them setting up and getting ready to speak about this horrifying scene that shocked everyone and unfolded just a short time ago near the area where president trumps a criminal trials underway in new york city a man on a park bench setting himself on fire it was an absolutely horrible moment correspondent nate voight now in that area reporting live from lower manhattan as we wait to learn more from the new york city police department. >> hello martha behind me the first criminal trial ever involving former president of united states is happening and right now almost no one is paying attention to that because we are waiting to hear an update from the nypd, any specifics about the man who lit himself on fire again that happened just before 2:00 our colleague eric

sean on the air when he thought and i thought as well, i was in the live shot on the opposite side the park that it was perhaps some garbage that was lit on fire and at first people were looking to get something to put the fire out, a fire extinct sure, but then it became much more urgent when a man ran up and tried fanning the flames with his coat and at that point i was able to run up to the guy because i wasn't in the press a pen i was able to enter the park and you could see a lot of pamphlets that had been scattered all over the ground and the man through those pamphlets in the air doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire he did not yell anything martha at least that anybody here could hear and he took everyone by surprise which i mentioned before as part of the reason why people did not necessarily know this was a person that had been lit on fire but he was just a frozen, his

arms were frozen in a bent position and he was very stiff and just a colour that is very disturbing you was charred, white or possibly yellow in their he was loaded up onto a stretcher and is still moving when he was wheeled away he was loaded up into an ambulance that lingered here for about 20 or 30 minutes but he was taken away to see if he can get treatment that can possibly save his life we are waiting on this press conference or a news conference to begin here with the nypd and we will hopefully have an update on the condition if they were able to save this man and also if we know anything else about his identity, there was one person that we spoke with martha who also witnessed this, take a listen to this gentleman. >> he just, i mean maybe he made

noise he flew a bunch of flyers, i was shocked that he just immediately burnt himself. >> this happened as the jury was seated we entered the day with 12 jurors and one alternate and a pretty quickly leading up to that moment five alternates were seated and what i can tell you about those alternates there is a woman who lives in chelsea, a contract specialist for two decades she says she is not a big news consumer, there is a man who works as an audio professional and he made a joke in court saying that if you have any microphone issues he could help with that. there is a woman who lives in murray hill and of the 12 jurors who were seated yesterday their professions, the judge of limited some protections for the jurors so we can no longer share where they work but we can share the fields that they work in, there are two engineers, at two attorneys, a financial consultant, a speech therapist and a physical therapist so

right now behind me this is the final afternoon session of the week court will resume on monday at 930 but right now they are going over if former president trump testifies what exactly prosecutors can bring up the da office has said they would like to bring up other cases that the former president has been involved in, specifically here in new york the e. jean carroll case and the civil fraud trial that just happened on the street so opening statements are set to begin on monday but again martha with such a historic moment happening behind me right now all eyes are on the nypd news conference that should be starting momentarily right now they are allowing all of the media to set up their shots and i can tell you behind our camera right now nypd investigators are walking around the area where that man lit himself on fire, very tough to say what he was

motivated by, hopefully we will learn more about that when i ran up to him i can tell you that he , i only saw that he was wearing either underwear or shorts so you couldn't get any indication about what motivated him from his clothing and he was just not recognizable at the point that i got to him. >> martha: absolutely horrible and we have no idea what his motivation was as you say and there maybe a connection or no connection whatsoever to what is happening in the court house nearby the pamphlets that you mentioned, are they relevant? what did they say? did you get a look at them? >> the nypd cleared the park and there were some pamphlets that were out of reach that we couldn't actually see exactly what were on those pamphlets, i picked up one piece of paper and there were some pictures on it

but it didn't indicate anything that would be relevant, i'm not even positive that piece of paper that i picked up came from that gentleman who would himself on fire. so at the moment that i was there i was focused on trying to help them and when that moment had passed the nypd cleared up the park and once we were sort of more in the news gathering mode after the fact the pamphlet were out of reach so i wasn't able to see what was on the pamphlets but i can tell you right now the investigators in the atf invest eaters here right now they are taking pictures of some of those pamphlets that have been collected in a pile in the park behind me as everyone here is just trying to piece together exactly what happened and it looks like this news conference is just moments away from beginning. >> martha: they say they are just about to get underway, obviously a tragic situation in lower manhattan today the new york police officers have been very busy with the protest at columbia and rest carried out yesterday not to mention the

ongoing difficulties that they have in terms of crime in the city and the subways and all of that but we are about to hear a little bit more about this information from the new york city police department we will identify who is speaking in just a moment let's listen in. >> we obviously had a major incident that happened just across the street from the courthouse today, we just spoke to the mayor eric adams and the police commissioner they are both updated and today you will hear from our chief department who will update you on the incident that took plays you will then hear from fire commissioner cavanaugh on the condition of the people that were involved, medical conditions, and then we will have the chief detectives joe kenney who will talk to you about the investigation of the incident today. with that i bring out the chief of the department. >> thank you, thank you commissioner, good afternoon everyone i will try to speak loud so you can all hear me, at 1:30 this afternoon right here at the park directly opposite of

the new york county criminal court at 100 centre street where the trial of former president trump is currently taking place we observed a mail walking to the park he walked to the centre of the park when he's in the park he starts shuffling around his clothes, opens up a bookbag from the bookbag he takes numerous pieces of paper, pamphlets throws them throughout the park and then he pulled out a canister and poured some kind of liquid on himself, a liquid that we believe is an accelerant and he liked himself on fire. the mail then takes a couple of steps while he is on fire and eventually falls onto a police barrier and falls down to the ground. he is on fire in another area in the park where some of the accelerant had spilled that was also on fire, civilians, court officers, members of the police department ran into the park they made efforts to put him out, using coats and fire

extinct servers and eventually the part apartment responded and we are able to put the mail, exterior's the fire and from that point we removed him to a burnet unit where right now he is there in critical condition, at this moment i will let the fire commissioner talk about the condition of the mail and the condition of the people who also helped and were witnesses over there, commissioner. >> as the chief mentioned the victim is in critical condition but is alive and intubated at cornell burn centre, at this time there were four or three nypd officers and one court officers, so for officers that had minor injuries from exposure to the fire who are all find they are stable and they are minor at this time, we were on scene as the chief mentioned it to reading and transport in the patient we do have our fire marshals here helping with the investigation at this time.

>> good afternoon, the mail that was involved in this incident his name is maxwell as a reload, he is a mail born in 1987 his drivers license indicates you is from saint augustine florida what we know from speaking to other witnesses and family members is that he arrived in new york some time in the week and we have his car being in saint augustine florida on the 13th so between the 13th and today he arrived we spoke to family members today who were unaware he was in new york as the fire department stated he is in cornell burn centre the accelerant that was used appears to be some kind of alcohol based accelerant used for cleaning. that's all we have right now. >> down the line, left right and we will decide who takes questions. >> i want to ask about security we reporting more officers?

>> after every incident we have an after action and we will talk about that but we have a lot of officers in the area is still open to the public you can walk through the park and there was no security breach here at all. >> [ inaudible question by the media ] >> the propaganda -- pamphlet seem to be propaganda based like a conspiracy theory, they seem to be connected to ponzi schemes and educational institutions being fronts for the mobs, so some conspiracy theory things going on here we will go through video but so far what we have seen today it appears he walked from leonard street entered the park and walked into the middle of the park and committed the act. >> [ inaudible question by the

media ] >> a very primary dealing with the families we just made notification to them that the incident is taking place. >> thank you we are very concerned of course we are going to review our security protocols this gentleman did not breach security protocols the park was open to the public but of course we will look at everything and with the magnitude of what is going on around here we will reassess security with federal partners, and like i said we'll go back to command we will talk to our federal partners and we will make decisions if we need to tighten up security may be we will shut down the park this is something that we will determine

once we talk with all our partners and the court officers to make sure that with everything going on and the gravity of the event right now we will make sure that we have ample security. >> from the video seems to get took place opposite a few minutes to get here was there no presence here already? is that maybe some thing that the fire department wants to revisit in case about emergency? because it was police officers using fire getting wishes that put him out. >> i will leave that to the fire commissioner but we are obvious he working and can't -- in conjunction with the courts and other partners making sure that everything is here and also you have to remember the park is open to the public, there was no reason for anyone to already have a fire extinct sure on standby no one knew this guy was about to let himself on fire,

two minutes is a pretty quick response time to be able to get to a vehicle get a fire getting richer run around and get into the park and start trying to excuse the fire all right? but as far as the fire department resources i will let commissioner cavanaugh talk to you. >> as they mentioned we will obvious he work with nypd to review what happened and if additional resources are in necessary we will place in here but typically for any type of major security event, which this is, we have additional ems resources on scene, fire only sometimes there's usually not a reason for that as you typically would not have an extra public park but we will work with nypd to review that, i would have to rip -- confirm what time they responded but typically in any high security event we have more ems resources on scene because there could be patients for any reason. >> [ inaudible question by the media ]

>> not everything that you see right here is part of the plan, there's a large security plan and trust me when we had our meeting before this took place we met with fdny, ems, court partners, secret service, i am not quite sure what else you are looking for ems and fdny are in the area during the trial as well they are aware of what is going on and our response time today was pretty quick. >> did the man say anything before or during the incident? >> as of right now what we're showing as he walked directly into the park and began to throw the pamphlet in the air and then

lit himself on fire, there could be more coming out during the investigation we have a lot of witnesses here and a lot of people coming forward, we hope that if more people come forward we can put a bit more information together but as of right now we don't have anything about him making any statements. we are looking through his social media and what he did online prior and it did appear that he posted something in regard to this event prior to the incident. >> all of his social media we

obviously didn't know him prior to this incident i talk about the detective bureau we did not know him prior to this incident but going back now to part of the investigation all of his social media any associates we will be looking at all of that. >> is there any link between this event and the trial? >> at this point is very polymeric, we don't have that as of right now he is considered likely which means he's very critical his condition is not good but as of right now he is still alive we are looking through that right now as five minutes ago before we started this press conference i did not see any criminal history at least in new york. and i just want the commissioner to step in for a second to talk about what he did in the early

effort to make sure that the area has -- is safe. >> thank you commissioner sheppard, you merely following this incident i requested the bomb squad to come i wanted the bomb squad to search the area for any possible secondary devices they are actually doing this now behind me with canine checking the vehicles as of right now there has been no additional devices found, there hasn't been any devices found sorry, in regards to this incident, and as far as question about enhanced security procedures were going to take a look into this and we may have to shut the area down but that something that we will do and we will have a conversation when we get back to one police plaza, thank you. >> can you reiterate what personnel you do have on-site right now? >> we won't talk about specific numbers but were obviously working with numerous city and federal partners in the area, we are working with the courts we are working with the secret service we are working with

sanitation we are working with the fdny so there is a lot of associations part of this but we won't discuss what number of personnel we have out here. last, last two. >> can you share what you told donald trump's service detail and his team? >> he won't share conversations with service -- secret service but everyone inside the trial is aware what took place outside today. that is under investigation i went him talk about that. >> as of right now on the camera we had him walking to the park but that does not mean that he didn't either take the train here or come in via a car we do have a vehicle identified that is connected with him we are currently searching for that car. >> last question.

maxwell lazarillo he is from saint augustine florida born in 1987 he's in critical condition and obviously badly burned about alive according to the ems individual that we just heard from and being treated at a hospital here in new york city we had a quick look at the manifesto that is attributed to him by some sources a very rambling conspiracy that involves doomsday and a number of other prominent historical individuals current and passed but no sort of clear line of thinking or specifically what this conspiracy was but everyone in time will get a chance to see what that was all about. he talked about a ponzi scheme and things along those lines but clearly a very sad and it disturbed individual who set himself on fire today in new york and is now being treated for massive burns in critical condition at a new york city hospital we have more information as we receive it.

incredible unfolding here in new york city live on the air yesterday a senior at columbia a jewish student who stopped by as the protest went on spoke with our reporters on the scene there and this is what she had to say. >> you're walking by your fellow students all of us recognize people that we go to class with every day who are calling for our genocide. >> i don't even want to go to my own graduation anymore to be honest with you because this is what's going to happen. >> martha: heartbreaking katie joined me onset today we will speak with her in a moment but first two correspondent cotton who is following today's unfolding story at columbia university dabbling in protest of their right? >> hello that is correct we are reporting live from the campus of columbia university what students here call a liberated zone and take a look and there hundreds here who have gathered to protest of the ongoing conflict in the middle east and call for the university to divest from companies with ties to israel you can see the tents

are gone but it is clear that some of the students plan to spend the night here there are blankets and sleeping bags and food is being brought back and forth, i should point out that the students are selective about which members of the press they want to speak with and they don't want to chat with us. word of this ongoing protest has made its way back to the white house where our peter dc asked about some of the hateful rhetoric that we here, listen to this. >> what does the president think about young people in america saying things like we are all hamas and long-lived hamas. >> when jews are targeted because of their beliefs and because of their identity or when israel is singled out because of anti-jewish hate that is anti-semitism him that is completely, completely unacceptable. >> while this is going on here on campus there are also protests happening just off of campus in support of the

students and martha as you mentioned i have been chatting with a lot of columbia university jewish students to tell me in edition to walking past this where they hear rhetoric that they find personally hurtful and offensive they are also hearing some remarks off campus that are particularly alarming, listen to this. >> never forget the 7th of october. [ shouting ] [ inaudible ] >> that video shared with us by katie who was there on set saying that is what her friend who was a jewish had to endure when she walked off campus, columbia university tells us that protest have been happening

since the start of the israel hamas war and they will be allowed to continue, back to you >> martha: thank you very much from columbia and the app or mentioned it katie a senior at columbia she is obviously, you have heard what it has been like for her very difficult experience, katie welcome what goes through your mind when you watch that video that your friend i guess shot that video? and people saying october 7th will happen every day 100 times, a thousand times. >> it's sickening and truly heartbreaking to think that i go to school with people who have these horrible anti- israel and anti-jewish and anti- american beliefs, it's really quite disturbing to think that these people are allowed to be around me and my classmates and to see my friends, people i recognize on these videos being screamed at that these people condone their rape and murder it's just

so beyond disturbing and i am a big believer in let people show you who they are and believe them. >> martha: how do you think we got here? >> i think that's a very complex question i think that columbia certainly has a lot of culpability in this they have hired professors who have said that these attacks on october 7th were awesome, were great victories for the palestinian martyrs and who have been known to be anti-semitic and that professor, joseph massage teaches a class on israeli palestine conflict in quality and you wonder how students get indoctrinated with beliefs but i think it goes deeper then that it's a rejection of american values as a descendent of iranians who escaped the regime for religious persecution i am grateful and my family to be in such a wonderful country and have this freedom and the fact that people take this, you take advantage of it to not only spew hate but also to take it to this level to burn the american flag,

columbia students brought an american flag to a protest the other day and it was burned and put on his shirt to set him on fire it was completely despicable and there is a lot of culpability going around. >> martha: you had a very difficult experience at college for the past year, before i let you go you, what happened after october 7th? how did it change your life as a student? >> it change my life as a student completely i worked my whole life to working -- to get into columbia worked hard to go this is my dream school i came here to hear from people with different beliefs and to learn from them and it has made the entire spirit is measurable quite frankly i can't wait to get out and i will never return. >> martha: you moved off campus. >> i did. >> martha: why? >> because only people including people who i was friends with turned out to support the murder of my friends and family and i couldn't stand to sit there and watch this everyday, watch how they treat the police officers who risk their lives every day

to keep us all safe, including then, they have protected them every day. >> martha: i and they're yelling's common their faces, i do not that was a student or not but part of that protest in the area. >> they called them the kkk all the time and refer to them as the same as the israel defence forces who are known, along with america, to be a wonderful defensive force that takes so many precautions and the fact that they take this so far as to call them israeli occupation forces and to say death to the jews and death to zionist on this campus it's offensive not only to me and jewish students but it should be offensive to all americans who have any sense of morality and values. >> martha: i want to thank you for coming in and for sharing my thoughts i know you have been through a lot and this is a very painful experience for you we wish you well in your studies and as you finish and graduate thank you very much for being here today.

spent time at columbia and peaceful protest is fine but when you set up a tent city in the middle of the campus and refuse repeated police demands to leave that's not peaceful protest that's breaking the rules and i want to point out that ill on omar's -- ilhan omar's daughter was not singled out all students were told if they broke the rules they would be suspended and at the same time she seems to have learned the family lesson well because she describes herself as an angry black girl and she also wants the university to council contracts with companies complicit in genocide, meaning israel, and her side never points out the horrible atrocities committed by hamas on october 7th and afterwards and be barbaric hostagetaking which also seems to get a pass. >> martha: i just want to play this back and forth between omar and stephan a and the plumber president was there the other day. >> have you seen the protesting we are against jewish people? >> no i have, no.

>> thank you for that clarification, there has been a rise in targeting and harassment against antiwar protesters. >> anti-jewish things were set at protests yes. >> thank you for changing your testimony. >> martha: do you believe what omar is saying when she says this is not anti-jewish and that they are not anti-jewish? >> i think it was pretty clear i watch the hearing and she was very specific in saying that win people are expressing their views that is okay when they are moving into discrimination and harassment and incitement of violence that is not okay and to go back to these kids for a second not all of them are college students all of them are coming from off-campus it's important to remember that it's not against the columbia rule to protest on campus they have designated areas to do that so that if you are a jewish student and you don't want to hear someone yelling we are hamas that you you don't have to, when they plant themselves in the
