In fact, some nights we will eat only fruit for dinner. I’ll throw together a quick fruit tray and a batch of this fruit dip and that’s dinner.

I have to admit, I have never been a big fan of dips for fruit. I’ve only ever been familiar with that little carton that comes with the store made fruit tray. Those cloyingly sweet pots of the white stuff…yuck. I’m not sure what they put in that dip, but it certainly doesn’t add anything positive for the fruit.

While there are plenty of sweet fruit dip recipes out there – like our delicious chocolate cream cheese fruit dip – I decided to try making a healthier option. After all, a balanced meal should include protein…I needed our dip to have some protein.

Enter the Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is the thicker, more concentrated form of yogurt, thus it packs a greater protein punch. While all yogurt is packed with calcium, potassium and vitamins, Greek yogurt has twice as much protein. Which makes it perfect for what I was looking for.

This recipe calls for plain yogurt and vanilla. I like having control over the level of vanilla in the dish. I also find that “vanilla” yogurts tend to have additional sugars added. For our healthy dip, we are trying to control the ingredients, so starting with plain yogurt is best. However, if you can’t find plain Greek yogurt, go ahead and use vanilla – just leave out the vanilla.

As for sweetening the dip, I chose honey. I like using honey as a sweetener in fruit dishes. I find honey naturally works well with fruit – might be a bees and fruit kinda thing. If you don’t have honey on hand, you could use maple syrup…which we Canadians always seem to have on hand.

Healthy Dip for Fruit Platter

4 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature) (3/4 cup of cream cheese)
5 ounces plain Greek yogurt (1 cup of yogurt)
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 tsp vanilla

You will want to work with room temperature cream cheese, this will make whisking the cream cheese much easier. Cut the cheese into cubes and add it to a mixing bowl. Add the yogurt and whisk together. You want to whisk until the cheese and yogurt come together and are smooth. Feel free to use an electric mixer or beaters. If your cheese is soft, hand whisking will totally work.

Once the cheese and yogurt are smooth, whisk in the honey and vanilla. Taste the dip. If you like your dip a little sweeter, add another 1/4 tsp of honey. We like the dip to be tangy – from the yogurt – however, you might like it a little sweeter. Adjust how you like.

When the dip is ready, serve it immediately. You can store the fruit dip in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. It may start to separate, so you might need to whisk it up before serving.

This dip is creamy, tangy, sweet and vanilla – I’m pretty sure that’s a word. While I used to detest the little container of dip that came with the store-bought fruit tray, this fruit dip actually adds to the fruit. Who said that a big ‘ol fruit platter can’t be dinner?

Add this dip to your next party fruit platter and impress your guests, or enjoy it with your next fruit dinner with the family. Oh, and this dip is also great for dipping graham crackers, cookies or pretzels too. Add it to the dessert table too.
